Drummer Lars Ulrich has said that Burton had a major influence on the direction in which he and singer James Hetfield was later arrested in their career.

Burton died 25 years ago yesterday (September 27) became the band's tour bus in rural southern Sweden.

"You could certainly argue that me and James at that time were more kind of the squarer guys, because we were more like, 'Motorhead, Iron Maiden!' Heavy metal T-shirts, and long hair and bang our heads into the wall," he told Revolver magazine.

"Cliff was just so fast in his palette of things that he was into and things that were inspiring him and the things that he was doing. So it was definitely his music, and his attitude, and his approach towards life that really inspired me and James to broaden our horizons, broaden Metallica's horizons musically. I would’ve been interested to see what else he could’ve contributed, because it felt like we were just getting started."

He went on:

So when I think of Cliff, that's what I think…that just kind of variety and unpredictability, you know.

The New York musician teamed alongside with the Californian heavy metal group for the collaborative album, and guitarist Kirk Hammett recognized that song, "Junior Dad" started crying during the recording.

He said: "I had just lost my father literally three or four weeks previous. I had to run out of the control room, and I found myself standing in the kitchen, sobbing away."

Kirk was joined by lead singer and rhythm guitarist James Hetfield - whose dad left his family where he was 13 - who was in a similar state.

He added: "James came into the kitchen in the same condition - he was sobbing, too. It was insane."

"Lou managed to take out both guitar players in Metallica in one fell swoop, with his amazing poetic lyrics."

The lyrics to the song include the lines: "Say hello to junior dad/The greatest disappointment/Age withered and changed him."

"Lulu" in Berlin, originally for a theater production based on a tune written by the flame - was recorded earlier this year for release on October 31 and November 1 in Europe is based in the United States.

Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich said the band's eighth studio album 'St Anger'in a manner which would "hurt the listeners".

Speaking to Classic Rock, via Rock News Desk, about the album, Ulrich said the band as 'St Anger' as "an isolated experiment". Album in 2003, six years after the band's last studio effort was released.

Asked about how the felt about the album, the drummer replied: "When we heard the recording from beginning to end, I felt – and it was mostly me – the experience was so pummelling that it became almost about hurting the listener."

He also that the band put the album out as they needed to "fuck with boundaries", he added: "I view 'St Anger' as an isolated experiment. Once in a while, as we’ve been known to do, we have to fuck with the boundaries. We’d already done 'Ride The Lightning', which I believe is a fine record – it didn’t need redoing."

Ulrich also said that although he understood why some people rated 'St Anger' as the band's worst album, he released Metallica personally can not not be classified.

He added: "I think it’s fair to say some people think it’s our worst album. But I can’t. The way I view the world, I can’t rank them from best to worst. That kind of simplicity doesn’t exist for me."

At the Ullevi syadium "Big Four" concert (also featuring MEGADETH, SLAYER and ANTHRAX) in Gothenburg, Sweden.

A few excerpts follow below.

Hard Rock Calling

During the interview on wearing the t-shirt of the mysterious Swedish buzz band GHOST:

Hetfield: "I'm in their fan club. [Laughs] I had no idea what they looked like until I saw the video. I heard the music first and I thought it was very great — very unique, very melodic and a breath of fresh air for metal. It reminded me a bit of '70s kind of rock that I liked as well. So yeah, I love the band."

On what kind of memories the "Big Four" concerts alongside MEGADETH, SLAYER and ANTHRAX bring back:

Hetfield: "Mostly good memories. [Laughs] And we choose to live in those memories as well. I think the [Rock And Roll] Hall Of Fame induction had a lot to do with a little bit of, actually, turning around and embracing the past — not being so afraid of it anymore or running from it. It was more of a celebration of where we are and the gift that we have now. So along in that vibe with paying back for all the good things that have happened to us, and also just maybe helping some others along as well, you know?! Metal has gone through difficult times. We've seemed to stay pretty strong with the help of our fans, and obviously, the music has a lot to do with it as well, the honesty. But it just felt like a nostalgic time and a good time to bring everyone together. Everyone has matured to a point where we can all get along fine and enjoy the 'oneness' of the 'Big Four' and not so much fighting. There's a good competition — like sports, you know?!"

Trujillo: "It almost seems like a volcano of positive energy, where you have all these bands and all of a sudden it just gets to a certain point where it has to happen. And here we are."

Hetfield: "As far as us getting along, it's really great. Being able to see each other in a different way. A lot of the stuff that we've, I guess, grown to hear about each other is through the press and through other people, and now you can actually look each other in the face and say, 'How are you doing?' 'You look great' or 'Oh, you have neck problems, too? Oh, me too!' It's like all these things we have in common that we're able to talk about openly now. Like, 'My kids drive me crazy.' Or just normal, kind of, dad things — just life stories as well. But getting everyone together and moving in the same direction instead of against each other is so amazing. And it makes you play even better. I mean, we've been hearing for years that we should play with SLAYER, we should play with MEGADETH, we should play with ANTHRAX. And finally, it seems like now's the time. And boy, the level of playing has… We thought we were pretty good. It makes you step up. Every band is on their 'A+' game, so the fans are getting to see the results of a lot of competition, and it's all for the good."

Metallica's most recent release, 2008's Death Magnetic on track to follow to prepare.

While speaking with Billboard.com, legendary producer Rick Rubin said the group is already batting around ideas for a concept album.

"I had a meeting with Lars [Ulrich] in San Francisco . . . to explore what the focus was going to be this time around. I'm still sort of thinking about what that is going to be."

He adds, "I'll ask a lot of questions and we'll probably listen to some of the riffs that they've been writing. Usually I'll hear something that will sort of indicate the direction and then we'll talk about it from there".

Earlier this spring, the band's bassist Rob Trujillo on the new album to connect with Robin KCLB interacted with:

"Yeah. I love working with Rick. Rick, to me, he's sort of a Zen guru spirit that Metallica needs right now . . . The first album with Rick was also the first album for me, so in a lot of ways, you're kind of testing the water. Now that we're comfortable with Rick and his incredible engineer, Greg Fidelman . . . it's a great team. And it's only gonna better; I really believe that."

According to the UK magazine Kerrang that the All Nightmare Long group topped the poll compiled, beating My Chemical Romance, Slipknot, Green Day and Foo Fighters.

Contactmusic quoted drummer Lars Ulrich as saying, "It gives me a very warm and fuzzy feeling that Kerrang! Magazine have voted Metallica as the band that most changed their lives. I remember the first issue of the magazine in 1981. I had made a pilgrimage to England because I was obsessed with the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. I travelled all over the country and that first issue accompanied me everywhere".

Metallica's James Hetfield, who about absent fathers is Justin Hunt contributed to an interview for documentary, Absent, recentlyattended a Q&A session at the movie’s screening in Mesa, Arizona.

Hetfield's father's family walked out when the rock star was only 13 years. Hetfield is interviewed for the film and Metallica explained some pain as a child he can afford proper, according to the ArizonaCentral.com.

At the screening Hetfield said: “When Justin asked me to be a part of this, I had no idea how much it was going to affect me, my family. My relationship with my son has definitely changed quite a bit. The relationship with my girls as well, has just totally stepped up to another level of me showing them how much they should appreciate how beautiful they are just as they are.”

Since screening is a church, Hatfield came to the meeting religious doctrine.

“My father being the equivalent of a pastor and really hardcore at home, I felt very smothered by all of that and I didn’t understand. And I didn’t feel free to ask questions about it because that would bring up my lack of faith. So, I have learned what great things have happened to people that can embrace a power greater than themselves. And, myself, being able to let go of the steering wheel and not trying to drive my life and knowing that there is a higher power taking care of all of us.”

Hetfield also talked about the very public personal issues within Metallica that came across in the documentary, Some Kind of Monster: “It was so heated, it was so much passion but a lot of it was driven by fear. And we knew deep down that we loved each other so much that nothing was going to tear us apart – even the worst kind of fight that was going on right then or him screaming the f-word in my face. Okay, you get it out. Now, the relationship is unbelievable. We are able to treat each other like brothers.”

METALLICA's allowed the use of its music in "Hesher", the upcoming independent movie starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Rainn Wilson, and Natalie Portman, according to Rockville Music Magazine,

Avid Metallica fan the "Hesher" font used on movie posters also will consider immediately.

In addition, the film, which is due on May 13 is the model for the Metallica's song "The Shortest Straw" including a piece.

Commented Gordon-Levitt: "I loved making this movie, and I love how it turned out. It's hilarious, but it's not just funny, it's smart, it's sad, it's hopeful, it's heartfelt, and it fuckin' rocks.

"Natalie decided to produce Spencer's script for a reason, and by the way her character's nothing like you've seen her.

"Devin, the protagonist, is a truly talented young actor.

"Rainn gave a legit no-joke badass dramatic performance.

"And, I'm humbled to say, METALLICA themselves liked it so much they gave us their music, they never give their stuff to movies!

The band's attorney Peter Paterno said, "Metallica owns and controls its recorded performances and Creeping Death Music owns the vast majority of any music embodied in Metallica recordings. Pretty much any legitimate business would have contacted us to see how Metallica felt about it. Maybe these guys just forgot."

"We are very happy to have bolstered the Writers Group Film Corp. stock price by using the Metallica name," quipped Marc Reiter from Metallica's management, Q Prime. "We only wish they would have told us sooner so we could have bought some."

NYmag.com reports HBO has cast Ulrich in "Hemingway And Gellhorn," starring Nicole Kidman and Clive Owen.

Metallica rock star plans 34-unit Lucas Valley subdivision

To subdivide the lower part of his property in Lucas Valley is being seek by Metallica frontman James Hetfield.

"There will be plenty of opportunities for community review and comment," Supervisor Susan Adams told the Marin Independent Journal, noting formal review of the project could be a year or more away. "I will be engaged with my community along the way."

330 acres overlooking Lucas Valley for preservation as farmland had been donated by James back in 2009.It followed Hetfield's earlier gift to the county of more than 400 acres for open space.

I don't want to give too much away, but it's not really 100 percent a Metallica record. It's a recording project, let's put it that way. Without getting too deep into it, it's more a recording project than a bona fide Metallica album. Whether or not we can pull it off in just two weeks remains to be seen."

One question, however, how a new record will come out, since Ulrich told The Pulse Of Radio that Metallica's contract with Warner Music Group is now done.

He said, "I do believe that we are without a record contract for the next record, so we'll come around to that one," he said. "I certainly at this point cannot say anything about what's gonna happen with the next record. It's not a conversation we've had, or at least not any conversation I've been part of in the last couple of years, and it's kind of cool to have nothing but options. So we'll see how it plays out."

Metallica's Lars Ulrich Sued By Personal Assistant

A lawsuit against the Metallica's drummer Lars Ulrich has been filed by former personal assistant claiming that he is owed years of unpaid overtime.

Steven Wiig was of the view that he worked tirelessly when the drummer was at home and on tour, is seeking damages for alleged state and federal labour violations.

For a breach of oral contract and continuing wages he has sued Ulrich, a lawsuit filed at Marin Superior Court showed.

In 2006 and 2008, Wiig claims he had not being paid bonuses,and accumulated overtime when he left the post in February 2009.

Ulrich and Team Tours, a Burbank company that issued Wiig's paychecks, are named a defendants in the lawsuit, according to the Marin Independent Journal.

Wiig is seeking an unspecified amount in damages.

"The band are keen to harness the current "good vibe" within the group and release their next album as soon as they can," unveil by the Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich.

Metallica on their Big Four tour will only play one show at U.S because they don't want to "overstay" their welcome.

Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax will be teamed up with the band,drummer Lars Ulrich says they will only play together in Coachella, California, because they are unsure of the reception they can expect in the US.

He further added, "Listen, we don't wanna cram this down people's throats. We don't wanna sort of overstay the welcome, and we don't know what kind of response there's gonna be to this in America.

"We have a history in Southern California, Slayer has a history in Southern California, Megadeth singer Dave Mustaine has a history in Southern California, so there's a lot of history in California."

He told that if fans of US like the performance of all four band then they will consider to extend their tour which they did last year in Summer at their Eastern European tour.

He explained: "If there is enough demand for it, obviously there's a very strong possibility that there'll be more shows, but we don't wanna overextend the welcome and we also don't wanna turn it into something that becomes this whole nostalgia trip that's gonna sort of be, 'Okay, now it's just gonna be this for the next few years,' and 'Celebrate the past.' So it's a balancing act, you know."

Adds that figure both physical and digital releases. Digital album downloads really increased by 13 percent last year, accounting for roughly a quarter of all album sales.

A two new Signature guitars from Metallica's Kirk Hammett & James Hetfield for the new models for 2011 have been released by ESP Guitars.Metallica signature guitars at next week's NAMM 2011.

For ESP and LTD in 2011 James Hetfield have a brand new body style. It has a set-neck construction at 24.75" scale, with a mahogany body and neck, and an ebony fingerboard with 22 XJ frets.

Another limited edition Kirk Hammett Signature Series model is also being introduced in 2011. The ESP KH-2 SE and LTD KH-SE are special edition guitars that will be limited to just 100 and 300 pieces worldwide respectively.

At the Sonisphere festival Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax are shared the stage for first time in our life. The show in Bulgaria was shown in cinemas worldwide and has now been released on DVD.

But many fans in the US, UK and elsewhere were disappointed not to get the opportunity to watch the Big 4 live for themselves.

Jed Roberts, who is battling acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, was stunned to learn bosses at charitable foundation Make-A-Wish New Zealand had arranged for him to meet his idols before their Auckland concert on 14 October (10).

The 17 year old admits he felt "nervous, excited... and I couldn't really wait for the night" but almost missed out on the meet-and-greet after his condition worsened.

"Death Magnetic", Latest album for Metallica, was officially certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) on June 28, 2010 for shipments in the United States in excess of two million copies.
Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich told The Pulse of Radio in an October 2008 interview that he didn't understand the controversy that had broken out over the audio quality of "Death Magnetic" shortly after the LP's release. Some fans and publications had accused the group and producer Rick Rubin of mixing the album at such a loud volume that the music is distorted and difficult to listen to. But Ulrich said that he's more than glad with the way it turned out. "I listen to this record, and I listen to it every couple of days," he said. "And when I hear it, it puts a smile on my face and it blows me away, and I don't understand what people are talking about. Somebody told me the other day that there were 12,000 people that had signed a petition to remix the record. We've sold two and a half million copies (worldwide) of 'Death Magnetic'. You do the math yourself."
A number of fans said online that they prefer the versions of the CD's tracks prepared for the Guitar Hero video game, which are mixed differently.
Ted Jensen, the engineer who mastered the album at Sterling Sound in New York, responded to fan complaints that the CD is too loud and the audio is pushed to distortion levels by writing, "I'm certainly sympathetic to your reaction, I get to slam my head against that brick wall every day. In this case the mixes were already brick walled before they arrived at my place. Suffice to say I would never be pushed to overdrive things as far as they are here. Believe me, I'm not proud to be associated with this one, and we can only hope that some good will come from this in some form of backlash against volume above all else."
Mastering is the process of preparing and transferring recorded audio from a source containing the final mix to a data storage device, the "master," from which all copies will be produced.
Blame for the sound quality has been laid at the feet of the band itself, producer Rick Rubin and his recording engineer, Greg Fidelman.

A second Christchurch show Metallica have announced show before tickets for their first show officially go on sale yet.
Because of overwhelming demand from South Island fans during recent pre sale for Metallica's show on September 22, they have announced another show at the CBS Canterbury Arena for September 21.
The announcement comes after fierce online attempts by fans to purchase tickets. MetClub members found the site overloaded. All Visa pre sale tickets to the September 22 were snapped up in 15 minutes despite costing $179.90 plus a whopping $20 booking fee. The Press received dozens of calls from irate fans, unable to purchase tickets from the Ticketek site or by phone with both immediately overloaded when they went on sale at noon yesterday.
Tickets to both shows are available during the MyTicketek pre sale which is available now.
Tickets, limited to four per buyer, go on general sale at 9am on Thursday.

METALLICA star LARS ULRICH jumped at the opportunity to make his acting debut in new movie GET HIM TO THE GREEK - because he relished the challenge of relinquishing "control" on the movie set.

I was never in Metallica so I like them. I think they're great. I've always liked them as guys, I thought they were cool, their band rocks, their records are great. "As far as the obvious with our whole band and all the bands, honestly, it's great. Metallica have said they were "profoundly saddened" to hear that a fan who went missing during one of their shows has been found dead.

The rockers posted condolences on their website, saying their thoughts were with the family and friends of Morgan Harrington, 20, whose remains have been found three months after she disappeared while attending the band's gig in Virginia.

The band said: "Our most sincere condolences go out to the family and friends of Morgan Dana Harrington, the 20-year-old Virginia Tech student who was last seen while attending our concert at the John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, VA."

Metallica: Metallica Offers Help In Search For Missing Fan

In the search for Morgan Dana Harrington Metallica is attempting to help, the Virginia Tech college student last seen at a concert staged by the band this past Saturday (March 17). The Harrington 20 year old went missing just prior to the group’s taking the stage at John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville.
“We encourage anyone who has any information regarding Morgan's disappearance to please come forward,” says the band, in a new post on their website. “Additionally, if you or anyone you know shot video footage or took photos of the concert or audience, please check to see if there is anyone in your photos who might resemble Morgan.”
The post includes photos of Harrington and includes a physical description, as well as details regarding what the student was wearing at the time of her disappearance.
As reported by the Roanoke Times, Harrington drove to the concert with her roommate and another friend, and inexplicably left the venue just prior the show. Her cell phone and her purse were later found outside the stadium, and her car was still in the parking lot.
“We are deeply concerned …,” Metallica says. “Our thoughts are with Morgan and her family for her safe return.”

Metallica has pledged $50,000 to aid in the search for 20 year old Morgan Dana Harrington, who was last seen Oct. 17 outside the John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, Va., following a concert by the venerable metal band.
The reward for her safe return now stands at $150,000, the bulk of which has been put up by Harrington's parents. On Tuesday, the couple will appear on Today to make a plea for help in finding their daughter. They have also set up a website, FindMorgan.com.
The 20 year old attended the concert with friends, but after getting separated called them to say she was outside the arena, couldn't get back in and would try to find another way home.
Her phone and purse were found the next day in the parking lot of the venue.

Police are looking for a Virginia Tech student who got separated from her friends at a Metallica concert Saturday and hasn’t been seen since.
Police are looking for 20 year old Morgan Dana Harrington, who was last seen near the John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville. Her parents say they talk to her every day and her disappearance is very out of character.
Mom Gil Harrington said at a news conference Monday that she and her husband need to know where their daughter is and get her home safe as soon as possible.
Police say Harrington was wearing a black T-shirt with “Pantera” across the front in tan letters, a black mini skirt, black tights and black knee-high boots.
She has long blonde hair, blue eyes, is 5-foot-6 and weighs about 120 pounds.

Since 2004, the rock band Metallica has been selling HQ downloads of all the band's concerts, in MP3 or FLAC, but only as a full album. Today, the band announced that they would begin offering individual MP3s for $0.99, on their site LiveMetallica. Full albums will remain at $9.95 for MP3 and $12.95 for FLAC versions. Metallica adds that there are 270 shows recently available, ranging from 1982 until today. Perhaps more notably, Lars Ulrich (drummer of the band) said that in the future, once their record label contract expires, the pair is open to offering their next album on the Internet, with a donation model, used to perfection by Nine Inch Nails and Radiohead. The move would be a stark contrast to the Metallica of 1999 which almost single handily took down the original P2P client Napster after Ulrich found hundreds of Metallica songs available through the client, for free.

Instead of buying only entire concerts, fans can pick whatever individual songs they want from any concert they choose from. Metallica's two sold out shows at Montreal's Bell Centre last Saturday and Sunday set a record for the highest paid attendance ever at the venue, Blabbermouth.net reports.Metallica also decided to be charitable with $21,462 from their two shows going to community services arranger Sun Youth, according to the Montreal Gazette."It's a nice gift," Sun Youth co-founder Sid Stevens told the newspaper. "People sometimes look at pairs of this nature in a derogatory or negative manner. But it's very interesting to look them donate in every city they visit."Stevens said Metallica have been giving part of the profits from their gigs on the Death Magnetic jaunt to a local charity at every tour stop. As for the follow-up to Death Magnetic, don't expect it in stores any time soon. Drummer Lars Ulrich told Dayton, Ohio radio station 103.9 The X that the pair will tour through the end of 2010, take a break and won't begin recording until early 2011. "You got another year on the road, and then you gotta, you know, suspire for a little while, then you gotta do it all over again," Ulrich told The Pulse Of Radio earlier this year.
"I'd love to put records out more often, but right now, I don't know what's gonna give, in between touring and having some chill time with the family and how long it takes to, you know, make these records."

When the metal titans in Metallica play Dallas this week, they will do so in triumph, on the heels of their late 2008 release, Death Magnetic, an album many are calling the pair's best in 20 years.

Good thing, too. What with drummer Lars Ulrich's anti Napster testimony to Congress and subsequent lawsuits against file-sharing fans; the self-pitying documentary Some Kind of Monster; and 2003's St. Anger, with its trash-can drumming, 12-step lyrics and general sonic ugliness, the pair had some ground to make up.
While reminiscing about his band's current efforts, guitarist Kirk Hammett gets philosophical about Metallica's ups and downs with fans: "We are a band that means so many different things to so many different people, and everyone needs their version of Metallica to be the predominant one," he says. "That's something that we're aware of, and it's also something we're aware that you can't actually fight or try to change."
He's right: Some folks say Metallica lost it after 1990's Black Album. Others say the fall started after 1988's ...And Justice for All. Others draw the line even earlier, with 1986's Master of Puppets. But by blending the intricate thrash of the band's early years with the powerful rut of its underrated '90s discs (aided by new bassist Rob Trujillo, once of Suicidal Tendencies and Ozzy Osbourne's band), Death Magnetic has made Metallica an act to be worshiped again. Songs like "My Apocalypse," "All Nightmare Long" and "Cyanide" biff the listener with crushing riffs, fleet solos and fist-pumping choruses.
Hammett looks back at the recording sessions for the disc, helmed by career-resuscitator-to-the-stars Rick Rubin, with fondness and pride: "I think we wanted to be in the studio with just the four of us writing music, and then going in and working at our own pace, just hashing it out among ourselves," he says. He adds that Rubin kept Metallica focused on a very particularly concept: Making music "like we did... in the '80s."
It bears mentioning, of course, that Death Magnetic also marks the end of Metallica's major-label contract. So what does the future hold?
"At the expense of looking like some kind of fuckin' asshole, I'm not gonna answer that question," Hammett says with a laugh. "There might not even be a record industry five years from now. There might not even be a CD format anymore. Everything might go directly to our cell phones. Who fuckin' knows, man?"
One thing the guitarist does know for sure, though, is that his band is just one part of a major resurgence of American metal. Hammett is quick to praise New Orleans doom revivalists Down, Texas-based stoner groove monsters The Sword, and specifically, the band that will open for Metallica at the American Airlines Center, Virginia's politically aware crushers Lamb of God. "I was looking them the other night," Hammett says of Lamb of God, "and (I was) thinking, 'Fuck, man, it was my idea to get 'em on the bill, and I think we've got our fuckin' work cut out for us.'"
He actually shouldn't feel threatened, though.
Metallica is as good as it's been in two decades. Now, if only the band could just stop taking more than five years between albums...

METALLICA RAISE FUNDS WITH FIRST EVER HOMETOWN SHOW

Heavy rockers METALLICA have raised $200,000 (£133,333) to help their local community in California, by playing their first ever hometown concert.The pair played a sold out show at the Marin Veterans Memorial Auditorium in San Rafael earlier this month (11Sep09), with fans paying up to $350 (£233) per ticket. The money raised from the show has gone towards the Marin Rocks Museum Project, an interactive museum of Marin music history which includes educational programs for young people in music and the arts, which is set to open next summer (10). Drummer Lars Ulrich says, "We love Marin, and we don't get chances to make an imprint in our backyard as much as we'd like. And this just seemed like a perfect opportunity to get involved in something that had Marin stamped all over it." Museum publicist Stephanie Clarke adds, "There has been nothing but positive reaction to everything about the concert. People are very excited."

Tuesday marked the second night of the current leg of Metallica’s North American tour. More important to the audience at U.S. Bank Arena was the fact that the band was back in town for the first time in years.

“Maybe Metallica should come to Cincinnati more than every five (darn) years,” shouted drummer Lars Ulrich, noting the obvious.
A whole lot of it’s-been-too-long love swirled through the arena for the two hour show. Sixteen thousand sets of fists pumped during the shoren shaking performance, and the band returned the favor afterwards mingling on the stage for 10 minutes, waving to fans, growling salutations into microphones, tossing guitar picks to general admission floor dwellers.
Though it’s the start of a new tour, there was no rust to be shaken off the Metallica metal machinery. If any of the fellas missed a note, it wasn’t apparent, which is pretty remarkable considering the speed and precision required for thrash such as encore selections “Whiplash” and “Seek and Destroy,” to name a couple. (There was also a thrashy cover of Queen’s “Stone Cold Crazy” thrown into the encore.) In fact, of all of their peers in rock who consistently sell out arenas worldwide year after year, nobody plays harder or louder.
Metallica’s 18-song set ranged from stuff off their 2008 return-to-original-form CD “Death Magnetic”; back to the classic thrash tunes that made them an ‘80s metal sensation; and rounded out with ‘90s crossover hits.Guitarist and lead singer James Hetfield sounded fine and looked fresh. The band performed in darkness during the opening tune, “That was Just Your Life,” with Hetfield’s face ducking in and out of spotlights as he moved between eight microphone stands positioned variously on the stage. The show was in-the-round, so the band did its best to give all sides of the arena a show, including Ulrich, whose drum riser spun in 90-degree increments. The rotating riser was one of several fancy production touches. Green laser beams fanned over the stage and across the ceiling. Flames shot out from behind the guitar amps, and grating on the deck of the stage emitted giant fireballs. Four casket-shaped trusses lowered from the rafters toward the band, setting an ominous visual tone during some classic “For Whom the Bell Tolls” riffage. That song, Metallica’s third of the evening, marked the first moment when the crowd went bananas. The old stuff always has ruled, according to diehards, and it always will. And though there were some nice riffs among “Death Magnetic” material like “Cyanide” and “The End of the Line,” songs like “One” and “Master of Puppets” were those with the power to make time stop.“Cincinnati, do you want heavy?” was Hetfield’s rhetorical question. “Metallica gives you heavy!” If Hetfield’s lead vocals made him the star of the show, the guy who added the most value was bassist Robert Trujillo, who looked like a cross between a high school burnout and an AND1 baller with his basketball jersey and his long, stringy hair. Trujillo’s finger-plucking approach brought a thunderous element to the music. It was as if he were inventing new low notes during “black album” songs “Sad But True,” “The Unforgiven” and “Enter Sandman,” providing a rumble that lent some eyeball rattling heaviosity to radio friendly fare.

Last week Rolling Stone chatted up Rivers Cuomo about Weezer’s new album Raditude. Near the end we asked about the 15th anniversary of their debut single “Undone The Sweater Song,” which he now admits is “almost a complete rip off” of Metallica’s 1986 classic “Welcome Home (Sanitarium).”
” ‘The Sweater Song’ was the first Weezer song I ever wrote, back in 1991,” Cuomo says. “I was trying to write a Velvet Underground type song because I was super into them, and I came up with that guitar riff. I just picked up that acoustic guitar and the first thing I played was that condition. And it just feels so classic to me, true now when the band starts to play it, it just takes over the energy in the room and you’re just transported into the world of Weezer. It wasn’t until years after I wrote it that I finished it’s almost a complete rip off of ‘Sanitarium’ by Metallica. It just absolutely encapsulates Weezer to me you’re trying to be cool like Velvet Underground but your metal roots just pump through unconsciously.”
While on the topic of the old days, we also asked Cuomo about former Weezer bassist Matt Sharp who left the band after Pinkerton to form the Rentals and afterwards filed a lawsuit against his former bandmates over royalties. Five years ago Sharp and Cuomo covered the hatchet and played a few songs together at a college show. Sharp even wrote on his blog that there was talk of him rejoining the band as an additional guitarist. What happened?
“We were just beginning to feel it out, and it didn’t pan out for one reason or another,” says Cuomo. Might he work with Sharp again? “I don’t know if there’s a lot of room for it anymore, particularly now that I’ve got a two year old.” How about the possibility of him playing with Weezer again at some point in the future? “Seems unlikely,” says Cuomo. “But you never know.”

It's hard to believe, but they're saying the Metallica spectacle on Sept. 11 at Marin Veterans Memorial Auditorium will be “the first time” the metal gods have ever performed in Marin County.
Legend has it that way back in the day, they even jammed at Volpi's in Petaluma before playing The Phoenix.
Evidently, all it took was a benefit for the Marin History Museum's “Marin Rocks” exhibition, celebrating the county's storied musical estate.

A new biography of Metallica called All That Matters is scheduled to be adversted in October through Plexus Publishing, according to Blabbermouth.net. Written by Paul Stenning, the 320-page book is described on the author's MySpace page as "the first all-access biography to detail (Metallica's) entire history from late riser childhood through to the present day based on clannish interviews with the band members themselves and those closest to them." Among the Metallica initiate who have also participated in the book are original guitarist Lloyd Grant, founding bassist Ron McGovney, drummer Lars Ulrich's father Torben, early Metallica producer Flemming Rasmussen, and many more.In other Metallica news, a man named Jonathan Diener who plays in a bridle called the Swellers has written at his blog that some test copies of a Swellers seven-inch single called "Welcome Back Riders" contains on its Beside a live Metallica sketch of Black Sabbath's "Iron Man" instead of what is supposed to be a second Swellers song.The actual recording was taken from the 2006 Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame induction ceremony, in which Metallica inducted Sabbath and played a medley of their songs. Diener wrote, "We think they were making some kind of seven-inch with this unreleased cover and it was interchang with our song. Which means Metallica's test pressing might have a Swellers song on it...These test pressings will probably be worth a load of money. We have two and we are exactly keeping them. Organizers say 16,000 fans of the heavy metal group METALLICA had to leave the Stockholm Globe Arena without seeing their heroes perform after lead singer James Hetfield was taken to the hospital.

Spokeswoman Carolina Satterwall says Hetfield caught a stomach bug Sunday and suffered dehydration but left the hospital that evening. He has returned to the United States with the rest of the band.

The fans found out about the cancellation minutes before the concert was due to start, when the other members came onstage to deliver the news. Drummer Lars Ulrich said the band members were “truly, truly, truly sorry.” “Trust me, none of you guys wanna hear me, Rob or Kirk sing,” he added, referring to bassist Robert Trujillo and lead guitarist Kirk Hammett.

Metallica was shaped in Los Angeles, California, October 28, 1981 by guitarist and vocalist James Hetfield and Danish-born drummer Lars Ulrich, after both had placed classified advertisements in the publication The Recycler about forming a band. The early personification of the band went through a number of members, including Dave Mustaine and Ron McGovney. Metallica got its name when San Francisco-area metal promoter Ron Quintana asked Lars to help pick out a name for his new magazine promoting U.S. and British metal bands. Quintana arise with a list that included the name "Metallica," while Lars recommended "Metal Mania" and "Hesse"; Lars determined to use "Metallica" for the band's name.

Metallica conquered heavy metal music in the 1980s and 1990s, emerging as one of the top musical acts in history by the end of the century. Drummer Lars Ulrich (26 December 1963) and guitarist James Hetfield (3 August 1963) started the band in 1981. After a few arrangement changes (including guitarist Dave Mustaine, who left in 1982 to form Megadeath), the band released Kill 'Em All in 1983 and toured the U.S. with Ulrich, Hetfield, guitarist Kirk Hammett (18 November 1962) and bass player Cliff Burton (10 February 1962). In 1986 the band launched Master of Puppets, signaling their development from speed metal thrashers to serious songsmiths who could pound out the heavy riffs. That same year a bus accident claimed the life of Burton, and Jason Newsted (4 March 1963) joined the band. Their major-label release ...And Justice For All was a critical and popular success (they had a top 40 hit with "One"), and the band toured relentlessly. Their so-called "black" album in 1991 included the hit song "Enter Sandman," and their exposure on MTV helped make them superstars. In 1996 they released Load, followed the next year by Reload, both top-selling albums that solidified Metallica's presence in mainstream rock. In 2000 they were in the news frequently for their lawful combat with the online file distribution service, Napster, and drummer Ulrich appeared before the United States Senate, explaining to a sympathetic Orrin Hatch that file sharing was, in fact, stealing. Eventually Metallica and Napster reached an agreement, but in 2001 Jason Newsted left the band and James Hetfield entered a substance abuse rehabilitation program, leaving the band's latest recording on hold.
